Global Breakthrough | Earthmother Achieves World-Leading Continuous Extrusion Foaming Technology for PPO

On March 13, 2025, Earthmother Energy-Saving Technology Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Beijing Technology and Business University and SABIC (China) Research & Development Co., Ltd., successfully developed the key industrial technology for supercritical continuous extrusion foaming of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) sheets. This achievement has passed the scientific and technological appraisal organized by the China National Light Industry Council and the China Plastics Processing Industry Association.



The expert review committee—chaired by Academician Jian Xigao of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Wang Zhanjie, President of the China Plastics Processing Industry Association—unanimously agreed that the overall technology of this project has reached an international advanced level, with the PPO continuous extrusion foaming process achieving a world-leading position.


This milestone marks the successful development of the world’s first high-performance extruded foamed PPO material, filling a critical global gap in the field. It provides essential technological support for the transformation and upgrading of the engineering plastics industry.


Appraisal Conclusion:


Overall Technology Reaches International Advanced Level

The appraisal meeting was jointly organized by the China National Light Industry Council and the China Plastics Processing Industry Association. The review committee, consisting of seven leading experts in polymer materials—including Academician Jian Xigao—conducted a rigorous professional evaluation of the scientific and technological achievement.


During the appraisal, the committee visited Earthmother’s customized continuous extrusion foaming production line and inspected the production site. Experts also reviewed comprehensive documentation, including the project work report, technical report, third-party testing report, user feedback, novelty search report, and records of patents and publications.

Following in-depth discussions and expert inquiries, the committee concluded that the project’s technical documentation was complete and met appraisal requirements. The project was recognized as an original industrial technology whose overall technical level is internationally advanced, offering broad application prospects and significant social benefits.


Technological Breakthrough:


Comprehensive Performance Enhancement with Vast Application Potential


The project uses a special PPO compound co-developed by SABIC and Beijing Technology and Business University. Building on Earthmother’s breakthrough advancements in extrusion foaming PPO technology, the Earthmother R&D team conducted dozens of extrusion foaming experiments. By continuously optimizing equipment selection, process parameters, and mold systems, the team successfully developed a new generation of dedicated continuous extrusion foaming equipment for PPO, capable of efficient and stable operation under high-temperature conditions.


With Earthmother’s customized continuous extrusion foaming production line, this advanced PPO foam material has achieved successful industrial-scale production.


This high-performance extruded foamed PPO material not only demonstrates outstanding mechanical properties, but also achieves V-0 level flame retardancy, low dielectric constant, and other critical features. Furthermore, it supports low-carbon, clean manufacturing and customized production capabilities.


Industrialization and Commercialization:


At present, the project has applied for multiple invention and utility model patents, and one technical paper has been published. The production equipment and processes have been fully stabilized and standardized, enabling high-efficiency, low-cost, and large-scale industrial manufacturing. The technology has successfully transitioned to full industrialization, laying a strong foundation for transformative progress in the engineering plastics industry.
